1911 Quarter Sovereign on eBay
One dodgy British 'dealer' (shyster would be a better word) offers '1911 quarter sovereigns' for sale on eBay. Despite the fact that there is no such thing, gquadros is undeterred.
This particular eBay vendor is already infamously mentioned in a number of eBay Guides, and seems to be a crook.
Does eBay care?. It doesn't look like it.

1911 QUARTER SOVEREIGN UNCIRCULATED 22 CT GOLD
RARE PIECE 1911 QUARTER SOVEREIGN, SET IN 22 CT GOLD, BRAND NEW CONDITION , THIS PIECE IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE UK AND ONLY MINTED IS DUBAI WHICH MAKES IT EVEN RARER ALL PICTURES ARE SCANNED SO WHAT YOU SEE IS THE EXACT PICTURE OF THE COIN ***I HAVE 200 MORE COINS I AM GOING TO LIST SHORTLY
there are also others in case any buyer wants one of those coins

What's Wrong?

  • Quarter sovereigns do not exist (or didn't*).
  • It is described as 22 ct gold.
It is illegal under hallmarking laws to describe an item, for purposes of trade, as gold, which is not hallmarked.
  • It probably is not 22 ct.
  • It is not a coin, but is misleadingly and fraudulently described as such.
  • The vendor, who is UK based, claims it is not available in the UK.
  • If it is made in Dubai, it cannot be a genuine sovereign of any denomination.
  • Describing it such probably breaches Crown Copyright.
  • She (Giselle) claims that being made in Dubai makes it rarer.
  • It is listed under Coins, British, Victoria (1837-1901), Sovereign.
All 5 category descriptions are incorrect. It is a breach of eBay's listing policies to miscategorise listings.
  • The saddest thing is that she probably manages to sell some, which all goes to show there is a sucker born every minute (and most of them buy on eBay).

Going, Going, Gone
As we wrote this page, we looked to see if this vendor was offering anything else. We could not find her.It is believed the same person also use at least three others eBay IDs, cherry4334, audrey31002009, and nbirch1234. When we tried a member search, we could find no trace of some of these users. The obvious conclusion is that eBay have removed them as members, but this is probably incorrect. It would find their feedback page, and show them as no longer a registered user. The probable correct explanation is that he or she had changed each ID, and is possibly still using one or more of them.
Yes, we should have remembered, she is still selling stuff on eBay as 'coins.sovereigns.exchange'. How and why eBay tolerate such crooks, we will never know, but it's probably because eBay make good money our of them, and would collapse if it got rid of all the crooks and scammers.

Gail Quadros, Audrey Alves or Giselle? Will the real scammer please stand up?
Thanks and acknowledgements to 'lapidary2' for much of the research work on this scammer.

Now they will exist!

Copyright Thief
Strangely enough, Giselle has until now avoided stealing our photographs, or at least we have not noticed, until May 2010, when we spotted one of our images on eBay, then we found she had used numerous images, in at least two eBay listings, and on her own website.

Copyright Thieves on eBay
We already have a page naming and shaming dealers using our images without permission. It's time we did the same for eBay, although if we include them all, this could be a very long page.
